He moved to Mumbai in the early 1980s to try his luck in the Hindi film industry. His first film was "Masoom," which was released in 1983. However, he gained recognition as an actor in the film "Ram Lakhan" (1989), in which he played the role of 'Calendar,' a humorous character.
After gaining fame as an actor, Kaushik turned to direction and made his directorial debut with the film "Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja" (1993).
